Costco: What to buy?

 May 16, 2017

Real Food Without Cooking

Recently, I’ve had several client’s tell me that they just don’t like to cook. I get it, I have moments where I don’t want to cook either. Unfortunately, if you really want to minimize additives and preservatives and avoid inflammatory fats it’s best to buy fresh and cook your food at home. Now, having said that, I do believe transition is a huge part of any lifestyle shift and anything that helps during a transition is a good thing in my book. Thank you Costco!

Hierarchy Of Choice

This brings me to what I like to call your hierarchy of choice. Minimally processed, local, fresh, in-season is always going to be at the top when it comes to food but that doesn’t mean it is your only choice. I like to think of the other choices as transition foods. These other choices still fall into the “real food” category but are more “done-for-you”. My hope is, these transition foods will help you stay committed to your healthy lifestyle change which will eventually lead you up the hierarchical food ladder to the best-choice, home cooked foods.

Real Food At Costco

Organic, anti-biotic/hormone free, pasture-raised foods are becoming more and more available. You can even find them at Costco. If you don’t like to cook, you can eat very well but it will cost you. Below you will find a visual guide to some of the delicious, prepared, real foods available at Costco. This is by no means an exhaustive list. I didn’t include any of the many organic vegetables that Costco regularly offers nor did I take one photo of all the available frozen fish. I could easily make (and will) an entire second gallery but I’ll leave that for another day. Hopefully what I have listed below will give you inspiration and ideas about how easy it is to find and enjoy tasty, real food.

Read labels and decide what works best for you. Some choice are less processed than others and some choices are anti-biotic/hormone free while others may not be.

If you click on the individual images the nutritional information will show at the bottom of the image.

I’ve created a free downloadable PDF which includes all the foods listed below and some ideas about how to quickly whip up a complete meal. Get PDF here.
