CoconutGhee

I have been thinking and talking about making CoconutGhee every since I stumbled upon a post about it at MarksDailyApple.com. Today appears to be the day that my thinking and talking turns into doing. I found a new fun blog this morning called KindaSortaHealthy.com and mentioned the CoconutGhee as a comment. That was the last straw, mentioning it on a blog without ever having tried it.

I broke away from my computer and headed to the kitchen. I did not make Ghee. I took the Ghee I had, from Whole Foods and melted that in a sauce pan. I then added all the coconut oil I had to the melted Ghee and waited for that to melt. Once all was melted and combined I poured it back into the container my Whole Foods Ghee came in (it was empty). I am now carrying it around with me and shaking it ever few minutes to make sure it doesn’t separate while it solidifies.

The melted CoconutGhee doesn’t look very appetizing. Both my husband and daughter walked into the kitchen and thought it was something I was taking to the vet. You get the picture. I hope I’m sure it will look more like something to cook with when it solidifies.

I like the idea of CoconutGhee. I really love to cook with coconut oil and ghee. I do, however, find both to have very distinct and strong flavors. The coconut oil tastes like coconut. I love the coconut taste in baked treats and in other recipes like Sweet Potato Spears by Everyday Paleo but it’s not great with scrambled eggs. You would think the Ghee would be a good option for scrambled eggs but the flavor is too strong for me. I grew up on the ocean. My parents loved lobster so I was lucky enough to enjoy lobster with drawn butter on special occasions. Unfortunately when I taste Ghee all I can really “taste” is lobster. That might sound good to some of you but not to me. If I’m having eggs I want to taste eggs.

From what I’ve read, CoconutGhee is supposed to be really yummy and bit milder than either coconut oil or ghee individually. I’m really looking forward to trying it. My concoction from earlier this morning is taking a really long time to solidify. I suppose I could use it as is. I mean I’m only going to melt it again anyway. I’m getting hungry so I’m probably not going to be able to wait.

Here is exactly what I did. I used up all of the Coconut Oil and Ghee that I had in the house. It just so happened that I had 1 cup of Ghee and about a 1/2 cup of Coconut Oil. I melted down the ghee and then added the coconut oil. Once it was all melted I poured it back into the glass jar that the ghee was in. I put the cover on and gave it a shake. I will continue to shake it now and then until it is finally solid. I read that the shaking helps to stop it from separating while it’s solidifying. Time will tell.

Hopefully this concoction will be my new go to cooking oil. I would like to use coconut oil on more of the foods that I make for my kids but they really aren’t fans of the coconut flavor. Hopefully this will work and they will get all of the benefits of coconut oil with out the taste. I have found that I need to be a little sneaky when feeding my kids healthy foods. You can read about the health benefits of coconut oil in my blog post – Coconut Oil, it’s good for you!
